Frequently Asked Questions

Must I be completely undressed?

Most massage techniques are, traditionally, best performed directly onto the skin, that is with the client unclothed. However, you decide how much clothing you prefer to wear for your own comfort.

Will I be covered during the session?

Throughout every treatment, you will be laying between a minimum of two sheets on the massage table. Only the area that is being worked on will be exposed. You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable.

Will the massage therapist be present when I disrobe?

Your massage therapist will leave the room while you undress. He/she will enter the treatment room only when you are on the table, fully covered with the clean sheet and ready to begin with the treatment.

What parts of my body will be massaged?

After establishing your specific treatment goals, you and the therapist will determine which areas to treat. The therapist will not proceed with the treatment without your informed consent and remember that you can retract your consent to treatment at any time.

What type of lubricant will be used?

A light oil, lotion or gel will be used. These allow your muscles and other soft tissues to be worked on with minimal friction. The lubricants hydrate the skin and are readily absorbed.

What will the massage feel like?

In a Swedish massage, the treatment generally starts with broad gliding strokes that will help to calm your nervous system and relax muscle tension. As your body relaxes, the pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscle tension. It is very important that you let your massage therapist know immediately if you are experiencing any pain or discomfort during the treatment, so that another technique can be used. It is a sign that your body is fighting back and you receive the greatest benefit when your body is not resisting.

How will I feel after the massage?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long term aches and pains caused by tension or repetitive activity. After the initial feeling of being slowed down people often experience increase energy, heightened awareness and greater productivity, which can last for days.

Are there any side-effects or risks associated with massage therapy?

Massage therapy involves the manipulation of soft tissues and joints of your body and depending how your body reacts to those manipulations; you may experience some soreness or bruise. Other negative reactions may include light-headedness, dizziness and fatigue.

Are there any medical conditions that would make massage inadvisable?

Before you begin your session, your massage therapist will ask some general questions about your health. It is very important that you discuss any health problems you are experiencing and medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care, it is strongly advised that you consult with your doctor and ask for a written recommendation for massage therapy before you begin treatment.

Always keep your massage therapist updated about your health status such that the best treatments can be provided to you.
